Variety diagnostics

A variety's properties provide important information about the quality of a given potato or grain.

Knowing a variety's properties is essential for the optimal implementation of cultivating plant products, from the selection of the place of cultivation to harvesting and processing. Protein patterns mirror these properties: they reflect the genetic information which is in the proteins.

Variety diagnostics is carried out using electrophoresis, which separates the protein mixtures and presents the required information in a series of 'bands', which in turn represent a genetic 'finger print' of the respective varieties. This information can then be compared with catalogued reference information, which can unequivocally pinpoint the exact variety of potato or grain, also providing valuable information regarding the identity and purity of the samples.
